Immigration and Visa Information
The English Language Center student body includes undergraduates,
graduates, and working professionals. Students who attend the ELC
generally fall into one of the following categories:
•
International students who are here to study English and then return
home to resume an academic or professional career. Many decide to stay
in Boston and apply to Northeastern University's undergraduate or
graduate programs.
• Prospective applicants to Northeastern University who want to improve their English skills before applying to the University.
• Northeastern University students whose English proficiency is not yet
adequate enough for full-time academic studies. Many of these students
are at the ELC to improve their English in very specific skill areas,
such as reading or composition.
ELC students enjoy access to all Northeastern facilities and events as well as:
• Library
• Media Center
• Computer Labs
• Language Lab
• Marino Sports Center
• Recreational Facilities
• Sporting Events
• Student Clubs and Organizations
Each Core class is assigned a conversation partner. Conversation
partners are undergraduate Northeastern University students who work
with the ELC to provide authentic conversation practice to our
students. Conversation partners are available several times a week to
chat with small groups of students about American culture and
university life.
The teachers at the ELC have multi-faceted, professional teaching
experience from both the United States and overseas. As published
authors and conference presenters, they bring experience,
qualifications and educational credentials to our students from all
over the world. All teachers have a master's degree in TESL or TEFL.
Dormitory space at the University is only available during the summer.
Information concerning home stays (living with an American family) is
available from the ELC office. ELC students also have the option of
renting apartments in the area. If you wish to apply for university
housing, contact the Housing Office at (617) 373-2814 or go to www.housing.neu.edu for more information.
Unlike your home country, the US does not have a national health care
system. In order to receive proper medical care, residents must have a
quality health insurance program. The consequences of not having proper
medical insurance could lead to an emergency that results in health
care costs that have to be paid "out of pocket." Your national or
social medical program may not extend outside your home country's
borders. If you would like information on health insurance options for
international students, please click here.
All students at the ELC are entitled to use the university's Lane Health Center.
Students are required to be immunized against certain diseases and should bring proof of their inoculations.
Students at the ELC must enroll in a medical insurance plan.

ISSI provides international students with a sense of comfort and
community by offering an assortment of orientation programs, as well as
intercultural activities and events. All visa documentation and
international issues are handled through this office. For more
information about the ISSI, please visit their website at
